Remote Job Scams in Egypt 2026: The 8 Red Flags That Should Make You Run

Egyptian Facebook groups are full of 'remote US job' scams. Here are the 8 red flags every English-speaking Egyptian should know before sending their CV or paying anyone a single pound.

Wallahi the scam volume in 2026 is insane. Every Egyptian remote-work Facebook group has 5 new "earn $3,000/month from home, no experience" posts every day. 95% of them are scams. Here's how to spot the real US jobs vs the people trying to steal your money or your time. Save this article, share it with your siblings.

Red flag #1: They charge a fee

Run. Legitimate US clients pay placement platforms like Hire Now. They never charge the candidate. If someone wants 500 EGP for "training materials," 1,000 EGP for a "background check," or "5% of your first paycheck," it's a scam. Always.

Red flag #2: They ask for your bank login or OTP

No real US client needs your CIB password or your Vodafone Cash OTP. Ever. If anyone in the "onboarding process" asks for credentials or OTP, block them.

Red flag #3: "Buy this laptop/headset from us"

Common scam: "We'll send you the equipment, just pay 8,000 EGP shipping deposit, refundable in your first paycheck." You'll never see the laptop OR the refund. Legitimate US clients either send you equipment directly via DHL (no deposit) OR ask you to buy your own and reimburse on your first paycheck via Wise.

Red flag #4: The pay is too good

"$5,000/month, no experience, work 4 hours/day from home" is fake. The real pay range for an Egyptian fresh grad entering a US remote role is $450–$800/mo to start. If the number looks like a fantasy, it is.

Red flag #5: They pay through "company crypto wallet"

Real US companies pay via Wise, Payoneer, or direct ACH/SWIFT. Some use Deel or Remote.com. None pay via a "crypto wallet" you have to fund first. Crypto-only payment is a 99% scam.

Red flag #6: WhatsApp from a UK/US number, no website, no LinkedIn

Every real US employer has a website with a real address and at least one LinkedIn page. Google the company name + "reviews," "Glassdoor," "BBB" (Better Business Bureau). If nothing comes up, you're being scammed.

Red flag #7: The "interview" is text-only

Real US clients always do at least one Zoom or Google Meet interview before hiring. If everything is WhatsApp text and they want you to start tomorrow, it's a scam. Real onboarding takes 7–14 days.

Red flag #8: They want your ID card scan before the interview

Background checks happen AFTER the offer, not before the interview. If someone wants your national ID + passport + utility bill before you've even talked to them on Zoom, they're building a fake identity. Refuse.

How to verify a US client is real (3-step check)

  1. Google the company name + "reviews" — should return real Glassdoor, BBB, or LinkedIn results from real employees.
  2. LinkedIn the hiring manager — real US team leads have profiles with 100+ connections, posts, and a real photo (not a generic avatar).
  3. Zoom interview must be on a real corporate Google Meet / Zoom link, not a "free Whereby" with a fake company name overlaid.
