Getting Paid in USD From Egypt: Wise vs Payoneer vs Bank (2026)
The 3 ways US companies pay Egyptian remote workers in 2026 — and the real exchange-rate cost of each. Set this up before your first paycheck.
You landed a remote US job. Now the boring (but expensive) question: how do you actually receive the USD? The wrong choice can quietly eat 5–8% of every paycheck. Here's the real cost comparison for 2026, from someone receiving USD into an Egyptian account every week.
Option 1: Wise (formerly TransferWise)
- How it works: US client sends USD to your Wise USD balance. You convert to EGP at near-mid-market rate, withdraw to any Egyptian bank.
- Real cost on a $1,000 transfer: ~$5–8 in conversion + $0 to withdraw.
- Time: 1–2 business days end-to-end.
- Pros: cheapest exchange rate of the three. Clean Wise USD account number — looks professional on invoices.
- Cons: Wise occasionally blocks accounts for KYC re-verification — keep your passport scan ready.
Option 2: Payoneer
- How it works: US client pays your Payoneer USD receiving account. You withdraw to EGP via local bank or use the Payoneer card.
- Real cost on a $1,000 transfer: ~2–3% on conversion + $1.50 withdrawal fee.
- Time: 1 business day to receive, 1–3 days to land in EGP.
- Pros: universally accepted by US marketplaces (Upwork, Fiverr) and many real estate brokerages prefer it.
- Cons: ~$25–35/year card fee. Conversion rate is consistently worse than Wise.
Option 3: Direct international wire to Egyptian bank
- How it works: US client wires USD to your CIB, NBE, or HSBC Egypt USD account via SWIFT.
- Real cost on a $1,000 transfer: $15–25 SWIFT fee + bank conversion margin (~2.5–4%).
- Time: 2–5 business days.
- Pros: the only option some old-school brokerages accept.
- Cons: most expensive. Bank may require physical visit for first transfer.
What we recommend
Set up both Wise and Payoneer before your first paycheck. Use Wise as your default (cheapest), and offer Payoneer when a US client insists. Keep your CIB USD account as the landing pad for EGP conversion. Don't rely solely on direct SWIFT — you'll burn $30+ every month for no reason.
Setup time
Wise: ~3 days for full KYC. Payoneer: 5–10 days (slower verification). Start both before your first US interview, not after.
Tax & legal
USD freelance income is technically reportable to the Egyptian Tax Authority. Most remote workers register as a freelance "أنشطة مهنية حرة" — talk to an accountant once your monthly USD income passes ~$1,000. Hire Now isn't your employer of record — you're an independent contractor of the US client.
New to remote US work? Start with US customer support jobs (lower English bar) or US real estate jobs (higher USD ceiling).
