Egyptian English Accent and US Employers: Will They Hire Me? (Honest Answer)

"My English is good but my accent is Egyptian. Will US employers hire me?" Yes. US employers don't need you to sound American: they need people to understand you easily on the first try.

What our skills interview listens for

In the Hire Now skills interview, every spoken answer gets scores for clarity, fluency, pace, confidence and how easy you are to understand. Having an accent isn't something we mark you down for; being hard to follow is.

Three things to practise this week

1. "P" and "B"

Arabic has no "p" sound, so "parking" can come out as "barking". Practise pairs like pen/ben and pay/bay slowly, a few minutes a day.

2. "Th"

"Three" can come out as "tree", and "think" as "sink". Put your tongue lightly between your teeth and practise phrases like "thirty-three thousand".

3. Slow down a little

Nerves make most of us speak faster. Pause at commas and full stops. It will feel slow to you and sound confident to the listener.

What not to waste time on

• Faking an American accent: it sounds forced. Clear and natural is better.
• Expensive accent courses before you've tried the basics: practice and recording yourself go a long way.
